Tourism

Santa Catarina is rich in many aspects. Its seashore is one of the most desired tourist destinations in Mercosur. In contrast with the hundreds of beaches, the mountains have some of Brazil’s lowest temperatures and the country’s highest snow fall. Tourism is active in these regions, and there has recently been vigorous growth in wine production with European grapes. Santa Catarina is commonly considered the best tourist destination in Brazil by specialized publications. A diversity of options is a strong feature. Its outstanding coastline has some of the most famous beaches in Brazil.

The interior offers adventure tourism, ecotourism, religious tourism, as well as rural and winter tourism. There are a variety of food and ever age festivals and in October there are German festivals. The region near the capital also has a variety of industrial companies, making it one of the most dynamic places in Brazil.

The region has also recently initiated the exploration of tourism potential at its hot springs. In addition to traditional manufacturing industries, tourism is important to the region that encompasses the State’s southern coast down to the Rio Grande do Sul border. Garopaba and Imbituba are locations known internationally for their surfing, and attract about 100 thousand visitors in the summer, from January to March. Laguna has nearly 600 landmark buildings and monuments under government protection, including churches with natural size and hand crafted statues from the 18th Century. In the cities far from the coast, the Italian settlers left marks on the architecture, with churches and large houses from the 19th Century. Gravatal has thermal mineral water springs that attract many tourists.

Textiles and Clothing

Textile and clothing production is one of the most traditional industrial activities in Santa Catarina.

There are more than ten thousand companies in the State, which generate 169 thousand direct jobs. Considering the number of jobs and the generation of wealth, this is the most important industry in Santa Catarina. The State is Brazil’s second leading textile and clothing employer. It is the largest manufacturer of knitting and crochet thread in the country and Latin America’s  leader in elastic ribbon. It is Brazil’s largest exporter of kitchen and bath linens, cotton toweling and cotton T-Shirts. Large companies with internationally known trademarks now share production with thousands of micro and small entrepreneurs. The sector has the industrial flexibility needed to supply small  orders swiftly.

The industry is constantly undergoing technical renovation, with investments in computerized looms electronic dying equipment and automic cutting and sewing machinery, together with professional training. One of the goals is to increase exports.

Opportunity:
As one of Brazil’s leading Brazilian textile producing regions, Santa Catarina hosts international events and business fairs. Texfair, considered the largest in the sector in Latin America, takes place in Blumenau with exhibiters and brands in the segments of bedroom, kitchen, and bath products as well as clothing and decoration. The fair includes visits from foreign market buyers’ and business rounds. The International Textile and Clothing Materials Fair (Feira Internacional de Materiais para a Indústria Têxtil e de Confecção -  Fematex), the Brazilian Texile Industry Fair (Feira Brasileira para a Indústria Têxtil - Febratex) and the SC Jeans Show (SC Mostra Jeans) are also important.

Plastics

Prominent in producing construction materials, Santa Catarina is Brazil’s second largest plastics producer.

Santa Catarina now hosts about 952 companies, some are among the largest in Brazil.  Even without considering the petrochemical sector, the State has Brazil’s second largest plastics production capacity, and is national leader in the production of PVC and is a standout in disposables.

Companies are spread throughout the State, while the Joinville region concentrates the PVC pipe, faucet and shower industries; and the State’s southern region is Brazil’s second leading producer of disposable plastics (cups and plates). Other cities attend regional demand, especially in the production of plastic films and trays in Chapecó and Joaçaba, and injection molded goods and toys in Blumenau. Plastic injection molding for engineering and civil construction are growing in the State.

Items once imported began to gain space on production lines: high added value plastics. They are parts and components for computers, electronics and for the automobile industry, for automobile lighting, window hardware, mirrors, brakes, steering and safety belts. The companies are large importers of raw material, especially from Mercosur, the United States and Asia.

Opportunity:
With companies that produce disposable items (cups, plates and others), domestic utensils, packaging for different sectors and pipes and fittings, the central need of the Santa Catarina plastics sector is raw material, given that the State does not have a petrochemical complex, and is served by Brazilian and foreign companies. Within the production chain, the local companies need machinery and equipment, mainly those aimed at automation and control of processes, in addition to solutions related to sustainability of production and products.

Industrial giants:
Santa Catarina is home to the largest manufacturer of PVC pipes and fittings in South America and Brazil and one of the largest in the world. The second largest in the sector is also found in the State. The largest Styrofoam company in South America is also in the State, as well as Latin America’s largest PET recyclers. The Brazilian market leaders in industrial packaging and production of cord made from PET are also located in the State.

Technology

Santa Catarina is prominent in the software development industry in business management and telecommunication solutions.

Driven by increased demand from local companies for innovation and competitiveness, the industry is prominent in the State’s economy and its brands are players in international Information Technology (IT) markets. Joinville, Florianópolis, Blumenau, Chapecó and Criciúma are the main regional development poles in this sector. They are completely integrated to the industrial activities undertaken in the regions of influence of these pole-cities.

The production of hardware and components is more concentrated in the capital, while the software companies are distributed throughout the State. Santa Catarina has some of the largest systems developing companies in Brazil, as well Industry as other local companies that participate in offshore projects with large companies in the sector, such as IBM, HP and Microsoft. The State also has several small and medium size companies with potential for development and innovation. Most of them were created from a network of business  incubators that host entrepreneurs from  universities and the private sector, providing physical  infrastructure and shared  services for the development of innovative IT projects.

The main products exported by Santa Catarina’s IT industry include management software for industrial applications and technology solutions for the textile sector. The main clients are in Latin American countries such as Argentina, Chile and Mexico. The United States and the European Union also have important buyers, who invest in local partnerships involving know-how and technology transfer, as well as direct investments. Some of the largest companies in the sector, including HP, Siemens, IBM and Microsoft have well-structured local partners. New markets are rising in Peru, Colombia and sub-Saharan African countries. The Santa Catarina technology sector stands out in the country, registering average growth rates above 20% per year.

Telecommunication pole:
Santa Catarina is a technology development pole for telecommunications and is home to some of the most important companies in Brazil. The Greater Florianópolis region produces 60% of the telephone exchanges sold in the country, as well as telephones, mobile phones, routers, notebooks and network solutions, call centers and IP telephone equipment. Convergence of the telephony, security and computer fields attracts foreign partnerships. Several companies operate internationally in the telecommunications market by means of strategic alliances with large global brands.

Opportunity:
The increased purchasing power of Brazil’s lower and middle classes in recent years and the consequent expansion of the communications and entertainment markets are creating strong opportunities for expansion of companies in this field. In Santa Catarina, they are mostly micro and small companies that require investments in new research and development of innovation in electronic commerce, mobile telephony and games, among other segments. For this reason, the companies are seeking partners by means of joint- ventures and capital from private equity operations.

Metallurgy and Metal Products

Santa Catarina has thousands of companies in the metallurgical sector, from small steel processors, to the largest casting operation in Latin America, which is specialized in cast parts for the automotive industry.

The State is one of Brazil’s largest producers of cast metals. It also stands out in the production of sheet steel for the automotive industry. In the basic metallurgy sector, which has strong participation in the foreign market, the main products are laminated profiles, pipes and casting. Brazil’s largest manufacturer of steel pipe with seams up to seven inches is in the State and one of the leaders in systems for metal roofing. The metal product segment is highlighted by machine parts, tools, railroad accessories, kitchen and bath fixtures, gardening products and various types of cast and machined goods.

Santa Catarina is Latin America’s leading producer of screws, bolts and nuts. Most of production is in the State’s northeast, especially in Jaraguá do Sul and Joinville. Other cities with important companies are Garuva, Criciúma, Blumenau, Brusque, Rio do Sul, Tubarão, Porto União and Florianópolis. Santa Catarina stands out in Brazilian industry because of the high technical level of its workers, much of which graduated from universities and technical institutes in the State. Joinville is a global reference in the education of engineers and casting technicians.

Opportunity:
The main industries in the sector are suppliers of high complexity products for the for global markets,  especially in the automotive area. By developing custom products, they are able to conduct simultaneous engineering processes with clients. Companies and technology centers in the State develop tools, run tests and prepare prototypes, among other activities. In Joinville, there are technology centers in the fields of machinery, metallurgy and laboratory analysis, which perform size tests and calibration of equipment and machinery.
