Santa Catarina is responsible for approximately one-fourth of Brazilian furniture exports.
Santa Catarina is Brazil’s third largest furniture exporter, especially in the segment of pine or eucalyptus furniture for home use. Exports in the State account for nearly one-fourth of Brazil’s total exports in the sector. The main production region is the northern plateau, where there are hundreds of companies in the cities of Rio Negrinho, São Bento do Sul and Campo Alegre. Usually of small and medium size, for three decades they have maintained a tradition of quality and competitiveness in the foreign market. The west has companies in Chapecó and neighboring cities, most of them producing products made from particle boards, wood and plywood. In the Greater Florianópolis region, companies in the cities of Biguaçu and Palhoça are specialized in high quality products for more demanding final clients. Companies from both regions invest in exports, the largest clients are in the United States, France, Germany, England, Argentina and other Mercosur countries.
Green seal:
With the aim of promoting environmentally sustainable practices in the production chain, the main furniture companies in the cities of Rio Negrinho, São Bento do Sul and Campo Alegre have created an environmental certification seal for their products. The BioMóvel seal is issued to companies that follow criterion such as adequate treatment of industrial residue, use of non-toxic glues and finishes and raw material from renewable sources. With the slogan “Your healthier home”, the certification was inspired by the German furniture industry adding to the distinctions in Santa Catarina’s production.
Opportunity:
One of the barriers to the even greater development of the sector is in the availability of high technology machinery of which there is little or none available in Brazil, and which are used in processes from cutting to finishing. Even with the sector’s good performance in foreign markets, there is also a need for new distribution channels to stimulate sales even more, given that the local industry has the know-how and is prepared to meet requests with specifications from different regions of the world.
